The 13 annual Antique and Classic Boat Show, hosted by the Chautauqua Lake Twin Tier Chapter, will be held Friday July 9 and Saturday July 10. On the 9, the boats will begin to arrive, but the real show begins Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m. and goes until 4:30 p.m.
The show will feature many different boats from many different manufacturers. Most boats present at the show will have been manufactured by Chris-Craft, “Century boats would probably be the next in numbers, said William (Will) Reynolds III, president of the chapter and founding member. “We hope to get a Hacker or two, a Gar Wood, maybe a Shepherd, Lyman, and then a variety of many makes and models of all those manufacturers, and many others too.”
The Chautauqua Lake Twin Tier Chapter has been in charge of the Boat Show for the past four years and Reynolds expects 60 boats to be docking at Bemus Point and around the Village Casino.
“The crowd we get is weather dependent,” Reynolds said. “Last year we had a storm so about 2,500 to 3,000 people came, but this year if it’s nice we hope to double it.”
While at the boat show, people can enjoy many activities such as the many area restaurants, the various vendors that will be present at the show, a Chinese auction, the many shops around Bemus Point and perhaps most importantly – viewing all the boats. Reynolds says that many of the boat owners will be present to answer any questions spectators might have about boats, whether it is about owning a boat, the restoration process or acquiring an antique boat in general.
There are also fun activities for the kids to enjoy, Reynolds points out. “There is a vendor coming to teach kids how to tie flies for fly fishing and I’m not sure about this year but there may be judging opportunities for kids to learn what’s important to look at when they are judging … and there is also a big play ground and swing set there in the park for kids.”
Seeing these old boats also can bring back nostalgia for people who have memories with these types of boats. Most of the boats are ones that in their prime were used for commerce, recreation, racing, collectability or just to live on. The boat show also features historical, antique, classic, runabouts, utilities, cruisers, non-powered boats and sailboats. These boats will be at the Village Casino and opened for public viewing for free because there is no admission fee.
Another major part to the show is the judging. All boats will be judged by Twin Tier Chapter members or other chapter members who have experience judging. Each boat will be judged based on the type of boat, age, condition, rarity, restoration and remodeling.
On Sunday morning, around 9:30 a.m., the Boat show will have a “Boat Parade,” which is for those who still have their boats in the docks on Sunday morning. Reynolds also points out that any members of the public who are still around could get a ride along the lake if they ask. However, if people would like to have a boat ride before Sunday, there will private boat rides available. Prices are dependent on business.
The Chautauqua Lake Twin Tier Chapter represents Southwestern N.Y. and Northwestern P.A. and has been in operation for the past four and a half years. Reynolds said that anyone interested in joining the chapter to become a part of the Antique and Classic Boat Society should visit www.cltt-acbs.org to find out more information and see what the chapter does throughout the year.
