Community Action’s Santa’s Carnival, free for children to enjoy

Written for The Villager
With Christmas being so expensive could you or someone you know use a little pocket break while still giving your kids a good time? Then come on down to the 4th Annual Community Action’s Santa’s Carnival Thursday, December 9 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Hosted by the Cattaraugus Community Action (CCA), kids will be able to spend time with Frosty, The Grinch and of course Mr. and Mrs. Clause.
“Community Action’s Santa Carnival is an opportunity for us to provide for the children in the area a couple of hours of just absolute, total fun,” said Diane Nowak, volunteer Coordinator.

Usually Santa’s Carnival hosts children anywhere from infants/toddlers to grammar school students. There will be many different activities for the children to be able to enjoy such as caricatures, a clown making balloon animals, face painting, music, decorating frames and having some hot cocoa and cookies.
The highlight for most children will be sitting on Santa’s lap, taking a picture with the rosy-red man himself and receiving a handmade wooden toy, created by local, Dick Hall.
Each of the five departments a part of the CCA also will have a table set up for kids to play games, win prizes and participate in different activities, Nowak said.
And how much will you need to pay for all of this? Not one cent!
About 100 children from around the area show up for this event, but the CCA is always hoping for more to come. You don’t need to worry about calling or making a reservation, just show up to the CCA located at 25 Jefferson St, Salamanca, N.Y. and enjoy the fun and festivities.
CCA is an anti-poverty organization that helps the working poor and those boarder-lining homelessness get some help and, during this time, enjoy the holiday season.
The CCA, headquartered in the old Salamanca High School, have many different places around the area that are meant to help the people in Cattaraugus County.
The CCA provides apartments for the homeless located on the third floor of the old high school, a place in Olean called Derby to help people, a soup kitchen, four food pantries, a victims services center and a women’s Shelter.
They also work with troubled youth and have a weatherization assistance program. This program provides free assistance to people living in poor energy homes to fix it in a way that’s energy efficient. This program is so popular throughout the county that it has a 650-family waiting list.
However, if around this holiday time you are able to give a little back, the CCA is always in need of donations. While monetary donations are always welcome, what the women’s and homeless shelters really need are things you normally wouldn’t think about, like toilet paper, laundry detergent, dish soap, personal hygiene products, and new or used linens (twin or full size sheets).
If people have any questions about the carnival or donating, please call Nowak at 716-945-1041 ext. 149.
